At the
Las Vegas Internext show this year, I spoke with a top20
webmaster, who was about 20 years old, about his daily
routine. He said he got up in the morning, sat down on
the computer, maybe took a lunch break off the computer,
maybe watch a couple hours of tv, but spent 75% of his
time awake at the computer. This is obviously a successful
webmaster, but for us mere mortals, we need to be able
to operate our web-site and spend time with our families,
friends, and other duties in our lives.
If you can't spend your entire day on the computer,
getting trades, updating your site, checking and experimenting
with sponsors, then you need a schedule that you can
maintain without disrupting other things you need to
do in your day (like your primary day job).
As far as updating, the most important time for getting
updates on your site is bright and early in the morning.
Europeans definitely have an advantage to this. They
can get their updates for Americans done in plenty of
time. The reason for the morning updates is that most
surfing is done between 11am and 6pm Eastern Time. Many
people will surf pretty regularly in the mornings at
work and occasionally at night. Generally, people expect
new things after they wake up. A site does not want
to show a visitor something at night as well as the
next day. This has an appearance of a non-daily update
schedule.
Throughout the day, occasional checks of email and
running through your tgp for cheaters should be done
in quick fashion. This is the period when you let all
your visitors see the stuff you put on that morning.
This is also a good time for contacting other webmasters
and socializing - an important part of the adults-only
business.
At night, you should get the next morning's update
ready. If you have good scripts, you can simply run
through all the stuff and let it perform the update
the next morning. If you are still doing it by hand,
setup your pages and get them ready. Then the next morning,
all you have to do is open your ftp program and hit
upload.
Most webmasters have the luxury of working from home.
In this situation, I would recommend doing some work
immediately after you wake up in the morning, or shortly
after breakfast. This is an easy routine to get into.
This work period should at least run through to lunch.
I prefer taking most of the afternoon off and sitting
down after dinner to finish up on things. For those
many young webmasters, you may want to work through
the afternoon as well so you can spend your nights out.
Whatever schedule works for you, keep it. Not only
does it make your site appear routinely updated, but
it also helps dissuade you from putting things off.
Updates cannot be put off, they are essential to your
success.
